2013 Royal Australian Mint Southern Sky Pavo Domed $5 Coloured Silver Proof Coin
The Crux constellation, also known as the Southern Cross, is one of the smallest yet brightest constellations in the southern night sky. Its distinctive cross shape, from which it derives its Latin name, is now beautifully represented on Australia's Second domed coin, a $5 piece struck in 99.9% pure silver by the Royal Australian Mint.
The Royal Australian Mint's second release in the domed color-printed Southern Sky series is the 2013 $5 pure silver proof coin featuring the Pavo constellation. First described in 1598 by Dutch astronomer Petrus Plancius, Pavo, often referred to as the "Peacock" constellation, is most visible in August. This unique and innovative coin, struck on a dome-shaped blank, beautifully captures the constellation's essence. As with many older coins, some stickiness on the outer surface is typical due to age.
This innovative color-printed coin is presented in a unique tin case, with an insert that allows the coin to be displayed upright. Recognized for its design.
